English Language Acquisition (ELA) Teaching Assistant
The role of the ELA Teaching Assistant is to assist in the support of
English language learners at Overseas School of Colombo. The ELA
teaching assistant collaborates with the English language acquisition
teacher, other teaching assistants, and content area teachers of
English language learners to provide language support through
instruction and targeted language skills development.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Use knowledge of the ability and language skill levels for
English language learners in the ELA Program to challenge students.
- Develop a general understanding of curriculum and sequence
of English language learning.
- Observe daily student performance and provide input about
student skills
- Provide a variety of opportunities for students to
demonstrate their growing understanding
- Provide one to one language support to target specific
language skills.
- Under guidance of ELA teacher, lead guided reading groups
and maintain records of group progress
- Assist with materials development and displaying materials.
- Be flexible when observation and assessment shows a need
for adaptation of lessons.
- Establish a supportive relationship with the children.
- Provide regular feedback about student progress to ELA
teacher and other content area teaches as needed.
- Attend any required meetings as instructed by supervisor.
- Complete regular school duties and other assigned tasks as
necessary for ensuring the efficient and effective day to day operation
of the school routine.
- Additional tasks as assigned by school administration.
Qualifications : Desired skills for ELA Teacher Assistant.
- Basic understanding and training in pedagogy (in addition
to English teaching experience), post-graduate studies in English,
linguistics, education preferred.
- Experience working with students 12 years and older
- Experience working independently and in partnership with
another teacher
- Experience working with and among diverse cultures,
religions and languages.
- Flexibility and willingness to adapt materials and
curriculum quickly to meet identified needs
- Patience
- Ability to take and follow directions from colleagues
- Willingness to advocate for students.
