Diploma in Optometry
Diploma in Optometry Program Structure The Diploma in Optometry is a two-year full-time program with 3 semesters for each year and an annual intake of 30 candidates per batch. The course helps to train optometrists to independently perform the tasks of routine clinical eye examination including refraction, to detect any pathological disorders of the eye and system. It also train optometrists to independently prescribe all types of optical corrections including spectacles, contact lenses, low vision aids, and vision therapy. Introduced in the year 2015, the Diploma in Optometry has successfully met the needs of the ophthalmic industry in Sri Lanka.
Certificate in Dispensing Opticians
After successful completion of the course, the trainee shall be able to;
Gain the knowledge on anatomical and physiological aspects of the eye
Understand the refraction, optical instruments and their functions
Be aware on identifying, analyzing, customer needs, providing good customer service whilst interpreting the prescription for suggesting proper ophthalmic lenses together with a frame for the customer
Match customer’s core values, expectations and minimize failures at each step of the process of dispensing the relevant optics to the customer in order to ensure that the customer is fully satisfied
Learn and develop techniques and skills pertinent to become a practitioner in the field of dispensing optics
Certificate in Ophthalmic Assistant
At the end of the course, a student Ophthalmic Assistants should be able;
To accurately perform refractions with Retinoscopy, Lensometry, Keratometry, Visual Fields, Amslers, Topography, OCT, Fundus photos
To review patients’ medical records, to record patient’s history to keep the optometrist informed about factors such as allergies and medical conditions that the patient has.
To perform clinical procedures such as recording vision, applying eye dressage and testing eye muscles.
To prepare patients by giving them all necessary information regarding medical procedures
To perform diagnostic and vision tests on the patient using optical instruments
To help the optometrist during difficult procedures in any ways needed, including administering eye medications and readying the optical equipment
To schedule patients for their next follow up appointment
Certificate in Audiometry
Upon completing the course the students would possess the competency to perform the following:
Conduct case history: be able to probe for and gather information regarding the patients hearing condition and concomitant factors.
Perform Pure Tone Audiometry with Air Conduction and Bone Conduction masking.
Determine if a hearing loss is present: if yes the type and degree of the hearing loss.
Determine how the hearing loss may be impeding the patients’ communication ability and quality of life.
Conduct Immittance Audiometry and interpret the results.
Correlate PTA and Immittance findings and make the appropriate recommendation for a hearing aid or an ENT referral.
Carryout a hearing aid trial successfully and tune a semi digital as well as a fully digital hearing aid according to the patient’s satisfaction.
Counsel patients to increase their acceptance level for a hearing aid and give instructions regarding the care and use of hearing aids.
Develop a rehabilitation program to ensure optimal use of hearing aid through sessions of fine tuning and counseling.
Make the appropriate recommendations for children who are suspect of having a hearing impairment: which diagnostic evaluations need to be carried out.
Interpret ABR and OAE results and make hearing aid recommendations based upon those results.
Handle clients effectively, responsibly with the utmost courtesy and professionalism to ensure their experience in the audiology department is pleasant and memorable.
Certificate in Vision Therapy
After successful completion of the course, the trainee shall be able to;
Read and understand the optometrist/orthoptist evaluation report
Discuss with optometrist/orthoptist and set up an achievable goal
Assess the quality of life for each patient
Plan and implement proper therapy protocol to the patient
Refer patient for re-evaluation appropriately
To adequately arrange a therapy schedule
Balance between home therapy and office therapy
Able to communicate with patient, orthoptist and management
