School of Nursing , Kalutara is a one of the leading government nursing school among 17 basic nursing schools in Sri Lanka. It was started 0n 8th January, 2007 to provide the increasing demand in nurses for government hospitals. It is unique within the Sri Lankan government nursing school system for being the only nursing school which has been attached to internationally recognized institution, National Institute of health Sciences( NIHS) , which collaborate with WHO and other international educational organizations.

The program is conducted in English. Three Year full time , internal education methodology adopted by the college of nursing may initially appear as a challenging task to students. In addition to gaining subject knowledge and skills, students develop many other life skills, including, self-organization, and time management.
Regular lectures, face-to-face teaching, discussions and multimedia system for teaching with a strong emphasis on learning. The study system supports the students through printed course material, experience book, audio visual aids, discussions, day schools, Bed side clinics, lab and field works, industry visits, web based learning, etc. Continuous assessments, evaluations and final examinations are also integral parts of the study system. The clearly outline the objectives of the course and what the student will be able to achieve by studying the course. Self-assessment, continuous evaluations and activities and procedure manual guide included in the course will enable the learners to continuously assess themselves as they proceed.
