About the institute
The MSTI campus is built to function like a ship. The main building hosts
offices, officers and crews messroom as well as galley on the first floor. The
ground floor hosts trainees dormitories workshop, power generator, water tank
and laundry rooms.
The history of MSTI goes back as far as the year . At that time Mercantile
Shipping Company Ltd. [MSCL] was founded as the first private shipping company
in Sri Lanka.
In MSCL founded its own training centre - the Mercantile Seamen Training
Institute [MSTI] in Galle. From the very beginning MSTI was to be a
non-commercial entity, that provided quality-training, accommodation and food
for the participants at very nominal cost, in order to attract the best possible
applicants.
In MMM was founded as a Crew- Management Company to meet all international
standards in shipping. MMM started out by managing the crew on MSCL vessels.

Mercantile Seamen Training Institute - MSTI
MSTI is dedicated to select and train young Sri Lankans to level of high
competence that allows them, to serve on any type of vessel in the world.
MSTI trains, Qualified Deck Ratings, Qualified Engine Ratings, Qualified
Catering Ratings.
MSTI - Officer Training Centre
We offer you a training programme that includes pre-sea familiarization,
safety training and an exposure to initial sea-going experience so that you
may come out as a merchant marine officer.
