I have to send my child to international school. I have no idea whether local syllabus in English medium is better for him or Cambridge syllabus is better. He is 5 years old. I do not know what are the job opportunities for Cambridge studied students in Sri Lanka. Help me please. Thank you

I would recommend studying under Cambridge syllabus and yes you can find various job opportunities as per your qualifications.

As you mentioned in the question, the solution is totally based on your ambition towards whether your son or daughter should be a well educated person( MBBS Doc, Eng, or lecturer) or not. I think you should have a broad spectrum about the skills and attitudes that may manifested from your children from very early stages. But unfortunately most of the parents have optimist attitudes about the career opportunities for their children from nursery than his/her skills. I never recommend international schools to make a good person with a good personality. First tell me which one have standard with the qualified teachers. They are conducting local syllabus or Cambridge but still they are unable to provide a good skillful educated person for our country. So I will strongly recommend gov school is ever best for your child. If you want to see your child with good satisfaction from their job please follow local syllabus in English medium to get a scholarship for our gov universities. I do not think you want to see your child as a worker in HSBC or mcDonalds.

It is based on your son's ambition.Cambridge syllabus is better than local. But it is depend upon you and your sons future plans.

I would say Cambridge syllabus gives more exposure and broader knowledge in terms of subject matter and English than the local syllabus. This is because the Cambridge syllabus more focus on research based studies and students are encouraged to do public speaking. Before talking about job opportunities you need to think about the university studies. You cannot enter a local university with Cambridge results for Advance level. You can do private degrees if you follow Cambridge syllabus which would be a 3 year bachelor's programme or go abroad with a scholarship if good Cambridge results but still it is a 3 year programme. Where as local is 4 years. Still job opportunities are available for both local and International syllabus because now most companies look for skills , good form of conduct and personality than years of study. What Actually matters is the subject and field your child will choose. So do not worry about jobs. Just decide based on financials since foreign degrees and Cambridge studies will cost.

Cambridge syllabus is better than local one. but if you target local government universities with high competition and free tuition fee then your son to do local syllabus. otherwise if you can mange education cost your own better option is Cambridge.

It depends on your economy, the language exposure at home n the potential of the child as well. Cambridge syllabus is more difficult and less competitive than the local syllabus and vise versa. Whatever the syllabus it is, getting a good job deserves a lot of hard word.

As a teacher my genuine opinion is local syllabus is better for a small child, in that curriculum the child is taken through a gradual process of teaching hard/difficult subject material. Almost all international schools do not have trained teachers, but only big books imported from foreign countries and the untrained teachers do not know what to do where to start.

What is happening in these schools is they teach the most difficult theories and when the children do find it difficult they compare other children and the parents are blamed. Parents also think it is the fault of their child/ it so happens that the two parents also blame each other for their child's incapabilities.

I thoroughly recommend the local syllabus

Since your child is young and just starting his school as parents we feel we need to give the best for the child. Local syllabus depends on the ability of the child's mother language. If the child is good in Tamil or Sinhala then its advisable for him to continue local. That too for the fact that child will be containing his education in Sri Lanka. But overall Cambridge offers more opportunity for the child . It has wide selection of subjects and also he can offer Sinhala or Tamil too for the exams. My advice is to any parent Cambridge is not outdated like local.

Simple Answer is if you followed local syllabus then you can easy to get entrance to local university with a free of charge. Otherwise you have to follow privet or international one. Job market is depend on what he or she learnt for their degree.

There are many advantages in following local syllabus than Cambridge. If you wants your child to be good citizen as well to do a good job you may select local syllabus. Because it is designed with moral values. But if you wish that it is enough him to get only the subject knowledge you may follow Cambridge or any other. As they were only subject oriented. And in Cambridge syllabus there's no room to study about our culture, history etc. But local syllabus provides the child with all such values

I do prefer Cambridge International Syllabus as your child will be exposed to up to date and well designed education materials. Job opportunities are depend on the skills that your child will be build over the time. He may be able to finish his studies earlier than government school child. His future path he has to decide after he grows up. Give him good education and make him prepare for the future. Good luck!

With regard to your query, if you have already decided that you want to enroll your child to an international school, then take the maximum use of it. Expose the child to either Cambridge or Edexcel syllabus. They are well designed to develop children's knowledge and will help your child to grow into an open minded individual. Do not worry about the job market as yet.

Better to follow local syllabus as it available university entrance in Sri Lanka as well as scholarships in foreign universities both. If your child is enrolled into local syllabus, in the end of the course he is competent in many avenues.

Sorry for the late reply, actually I think local syllabus English medium is good for gain English knowledge & if the child work hard can inter the local universities. As well as easily gets jobs in SL
Cambridge syllabus is little hard & the books are expensive, but if the parent has enough money to send his kid an other country he can complete his degrees very fast. Not like local universities

Comment author woman

That is a difficult question to answer. if you are sending your child abroad after studies Cambridge better otherwise local would be better. if needed Cambridge can be done privately.

Comment author woman

First limit your goal i.e you want to send your child to abroad or not. Moreover check out your financial status whether you can meet the expenditure. for instance, School fee, tuition fee out side the school. Then check your ability if you can support his studies in time of his difficulties.

if you are perfect enough on the above things, then allow him to study the Cambridge syllabus. But some thing is very important.
1. he will follow the foreign culture because curriculum is being designed according to the foreign context.
2. you have to send him to a foreign country for his university level studies.
3. Cambridge syllabus can not be suitable for following higher studies in Sri Lanka
